Pioneer Launches Complete Line Of New Subwoofers: 2001 subwoofers use Voice Coil Cooling System technology

Pioneer Electronics, the world's largest car speaker manufacturer, released an entirely new line of Pioneer and Premier subwoofers with Voice Coil Cooling System (VCCS) technology. For the first time in its history, both the Pioneer and Premier line of subwoofers were simultaneously redesigned and engineered from the ground up, offering consumers the best subwoofers in the industry.

Pioneer's patent pending VCCS technology was used in the Premier Reference Series subwoofer that launched Team Pioneer competitor Mark Liggett to status of national champion at the 2000 IASCA World Finals sound competition.

"Pioneer's VCCS subwoofers truly put me over the top to win the IASCA Finals. They produce a ton of bass and sound phenomenal," said Mark Liggett, Team Pioneer member and 2000 IASCA World Champion in the expert 1-600 category. The VCCS technology is used to reduce the operating temperature of the voice coil of a subwoofer by as much as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat produced in the voice coil of a typical subwoofer can rise to more than 500 degrees Fahrenheit, which not only changes the electrical and mechanical design of the speaker but also can cause speaker failure.

In Pioneer's subwoofers, an aluminum bobbin and center cap are at the center of the voice coil to draw the heat toward the front and center of the subwoofer, where it is cooled by the moving air. Aluminum was chosen for the bobbin and center cap because of its thermal conductivity. Decreasing the voice coil temperature allows the mechanical characteristics to remain consistent, resulting in a very tight and accurate bass, improved frequency response and increased sound pressure level (SPL) at any volume.

"Pioneer's VCCS design is a breakthrough in speaker technology that we have incorporated into the entire product line," said Keith Burnett, vice president of marketing, Pioneer Car Electronics Division.

In addition to Pioneer's state-of-the-art VCCS technology, Pioneer's speaker engineers created a 3D Power Cone design to produce an extremely strong and rigid speaker cone. The special shapes or "folds" imbedded in the molding of the cone not only make the subwoofer physically attractive, but also prevent modal distortion (unwanted distortion caused by uneven flexing). The 3D Power Cone design virtually eliminates weakness in any area of the cone, especially at high sound pressure levels when cone flex is common. In the step-up Pioneer and Premier subwoofers, Metal Inserts were added to further increase the rigidity and strength of the cone and enhance VCCS technology, by extending the cooling surface. Another Pioneer first in speaker technology, the metal inserts are connected to the metal dust cap to prevent the cone from folding and to dissipate the heat generated by the voice coil.

Pioneer's full line of 2001 subwoofers includes five 10-inch models, five 12-inch models, and two 15-inch models. The Premier series is comprised of two 10-inch and two 12-inch models. The 2001 Pioneer and Premier subwoofers share the following state-of-the-art technologies:
